Vertigo Kid

why
whywhywhy
why does it all have to change?
why, does it have to be this way? why,
I say.

that cigarette you hold between your fingers
so smooth and cool
is me.
I'm your cigarette.
so you take a drag 'cause you're addicted,
you take a drag 'cause you're in love
and when you inhale deep enough
I'm in your lungs,
so close to your heart but
before I can reach out
you
exhale
me
and then crush the rest of me,
under your
heel.

don't take that medicine, kid
you don't need it tonight
just strum on that guitar, kid
and croon with that voice of gold
and go wherever you please
but promise me you'll be careful, kid
be careful, kid
be careful.

but you weren't
you lost him
he's gone now
you forgot

look up, wont you?
look at the stars
the stars don't know what you are, only
who
they see you with a light and they will
never
judge you, or hate you, or tell you that you were wrong
(even if you were)
because they're stars.
so next time you're questioning why,
or sending clouds of smoke into the sky or
making that drug your lullaby
look at the stars
'cause they're always looking at you, kid.

don't forget.
